心里在流血，我是从四川山区考大学然后分到北京的。山区的四川人勤劳又淳朴，多少年来大小灾难不断，这一次可要挺住啊。

I was in 唐山Tangshan two weeks after the earthquake for 抗震救灾 in 1976. By then, people did not have medium to see what were in 唐山Tangshan. So it felt less painful than now. But I am sure it was much worse 32 yrs ago than now. It is hardly to describe how ugly we had then, dead bodies, clashed bldg, even something should not be seen. People were so desperate that they even did not cry any more two weeks after the disaster. We stayed under large size shelters for 12 days. All food was made from corn only for minimum and drank directly from water tabs (there was no bottle water then. So I am sick-free from dirty water now). No power supply.

唐山Tangshan: the whole city was wiped out. Only one bldg, The People's Bank, had one corner with 4-floors standing by the street when we arrived. It disappeared when we left there. One difference I notice is these buildings. In Tangshan then, most buildings were made of bricks only. It was not hard to remove all debris. Now, it is hard to get people out of the heavy cement from clashed buildings. it seems that either the buildings materials are light ones, or they should be strong enough against 8.0 earthquake.

I have confidence on Chinese people, who can overcome these kinds of disasters such as SARS. History approves that Chinese people would always perform above expectations when they are under pressure.

中新社温哥华五月十五日电 (尹琳)加拿大联邦政府十五日宣布，加拿大民众每为中国四川地震灾区捐一块钱，政府就跟进一块钱，不设上限，不设截止日期。

　　加拿大联邦多元文化部长肯尼今天下午召开新闻发布会，宣布加拿大已经响应国际红十字会的号召，向国际红十字会捐款一百万美元。国际红十字会今天号召世界各国政府捐助九百万美元，民间筹款一千九百万美元，用于中国地震救灾和灾后重建。

　　肯尼表示，加拿大政府立刻做出回应，捐款额度达到总额度的九分之一。他同时强调，大灾难发生时，情况随时都会变化，而加拿大也随时做好准备，可以追加捐款，也可以根据中国的需要派出专人前去救援。

　　据悉，这是加拿大政府有史以来第三次跟进民间筹款，前两次都是在二00五年，赈灾对象分别是印尼海啸和巴基斯坦地震，前者跟进额高达两亿元。

　　肯尼认为，包括华裔社群在内的加拿大民众纷纷伸出援手值得赞扬，而政府也愿意做出自己的贡献。

Ottawa–Canadians who donate money to humanitarian agencies providing relief from natural disasters in Burma and China will have their dollars matched by the federal government, International Co-operation Minister Bev Oda announced yesterday.

There will be a cap on individual donations and the matching will be limited for a certain period."We will match the private contributions to organizations that are being able to do work in Burma," Oda told reporters.

Oda had earlier promised $2 million in aid to Burma, also known as Myanmar, devastated by the cyclone that the UN and Red Cross estimates could leave as many as 100,000 people dead.

Funding agencies in Burma will help Ottawa circumvent resistance from the ruling junta, which has not been co-operating with foreign relief efforts.

"Our government will be there when the need is there, but most importantly (we will) make sure that whatever aid that we provide is going to actually get to the victims and their families," Oda said.

New Democrat foreign affairs critic Paul Dewar welcomed the funding but said the government should take a more proactive role.

His Parliamentary Friends of Burma group held a press conference earlier yesterday at which Dewar suggested that Canada should consider helping the some 140,000 refugees in camps on the border with Thailand if it cannot enter Burma itself.

"There are problems getting into Burma. We do need to deliver aid quicker," he said.

"But one thing we can certainly anticipate is the numbers in those refugee camps are going to explode."
