Massive rock slide closes B.C.'s Sea to Sky Highway
A massive rock slide has blocked a portion of B.C.'s Sea to sky Highway and a parallel railway system in both directions.
Highway 99 is closed from the Furry Creek Bridge to Horseshoe Bay, about 20 kilometres south of Squamish, B.C.
Just before midnight Tuesday, truck-sized boulders came crashing down on the road near Porteau Cove, covering both lanes of traffic and trailing into the water.
At least 16,000 cubic metres of debris have fallen onto the highway.
Police say one van was grazed by the rock slide but no one in the vehicle was hurt.
Squamish RCMP Corporal Dave Ritchie says the larger rocks will have to be drilled and blasted and hauled away in smaller chunks to clear the road.
A Transportation Ministry spokesman said Wednesday the road would be closed until further notice because it's too dangerous for crews to get through.
"Geotechnical engineers are at the site, assessing the stability of the area,'' said Jeff Knight. "They need to make sure it's safe before workers go in and begin the cleanup.''
Early estimates suggest the road will be closed for at least 24 hours. |
