Meager (sometimes spelled Meagher) Hot Springs are in the recently-active Garibaldi Volcanic Belt. There is still intense interest in developing geothermal energy from the magma chambers not far under the surface. The area is tectonically active resulting in a lot of landslides in these beautiful valleys.
Meager's source waters have a median temparture of 166F with high temps of over 366F. Of course, mixture with the ice-cold water of the nearby Meager Creek keep the temps reasonable.
NOTE: At the present time Meager HS is inaccessible because of the bridge washout from the Oct 2003 storms. To date, the money has not been found to replace the bridge.
Meager Hot Spings was managed by Mike Sato (the new owner of Scenic and Cayley). He produced some beautiful roc pools and landscaping that blend well with the terrain. The site is on Crown Land (same as our Federal Land). A $5CAN user fee was charged and C/O was the norm.
Directions: From Pemberton, head northwest on a logging road alongside the Lillooet River, a total distance of about 40 mi or 64km, to the mouth of Meager Creek. At this point another logging road crosses the Lillioet River where the caretaker used to collect your fees. From this bridge to the springs is about 5 miles or 9km, crossing another creek that is subject to bridge washouts every 3 years or so . . . and then the final bridge that washed out over Meager Creek just before the spring area.
Have fun everybody! |
