FRESH WATER FISHING REPORT

UPDATED March, 8th 2009

PLEASE NOTE ** OUR FREE FISHING REPORT HOT LINE HAS BEEN CHANGED BACK TO (604)638-5899 (no access code required)

Squamish-

Dollie fishing can be good through the winter months. The best areas to target these fish are in the upper reaches of the river were the fish are more concentrated. Steelhead fishing has been slow on the Squamish and Chekamus but traditionally fishing doesn't start to pick up until March & April.

Capilano-

Steelhead fishing has been slow for the most part, which is usually the case on the Cap due to the low returns. Cutthroat can be found throughout the system and can be fun to target on the cast fly. Take note that all steelhead and cutthroat trout caught in the river must be released unharmed.

Upper Fraser-

Cutthroat fishing will pick up soon. This time of year, coastal cutthroat start to enter the river awaiting the salmon fry. Any of the creek mouths, sloughs or back channels between Chilliwack and Hope, are good areas to target these predatory fish. Fly fishing with Streamer patterns immitating salmon fry or sculpin will be your best bet. If your gear hucking, spoons and spinners should work well. Sturgeon fishing is starting to pick up a bit in the upper river, and will continue to get better and better as we approach spring and the water tempature starts to rise.

Vedder/Chilliwack-

Steelhead fishing has improved in the last few days. Traditionally the vedder recieves a healthy run of late wild fish that enter the river through March and April. From the reports we have heard in the last week it seems that the first wave of late run fish has entered the river, typically these fish are above average in size. Clarity in the lower river is ideal with about 3 and to 4 feet of visability, warmer tempatures and rain is expected for the next few days so conditions might fluctuate a bit. Good steelhead fishing will continue through the month and well into April. This season has produced lots of big Steelhead in the mid to high teens, and at least 5 confirmed fish in the 20's, one measuring 42" inches. During low clear water conditions it is important to fish smart with gear such as Clear Drift or Drennan floats, longer leaders, preferably Flourocarbon and small offerings such as size 2 to 4 hooks fished with little bits of wool, single Jensen eggs and small pieces of bait.

This is a picture of Peter Macphersons monster 42"inch Buck from the vedder/Chilliwack caught this season.

Chehalis-

Steelhead fishing has been hit or miss. Last week, we heard of two confirmed fish but fishing has been tough for the most part due to the super low water levels. During or just after high water is usually the best time to fish this system.

Harrison-

Cutthroat fishing through spring can be excellent. The Harrison always seems to prouduce good sized Cutthroat trout in healthy numbers. The Chum Salmon fry will start their migration down river to the ocean through early spring. The Cutthroat will be set in ambush awaiting them. Fly fishing with streamer patterns immitating salmon fry is the most rewarding way to target these fish. If you are gear fishing; "Croc" spoons, "Dick Knites" and Spinners such as "Blue Fox", "Mepps" are good bets.

Stave-

Cutthroat trout, Mountain White fish, and Northern Pikeminnow are available throughout the system this time of year. We havent heard too much in the way of Steelhead catches, but you can bet there are a few kickin' around.

Local Lakes-

As we get closer to spring and the days get warmer, expect the local lakes to start fishing well. Most of the local lakes are stocked mid to late March.

Salt Water Report

Updated March 11th, 2009

Local Saltwater-

Local feeder fishing has improved a bit in the last 7 days. Some good customers reported some nice fish out at the Freighters. The Cap mouth has been fairly consisant during the flood tide, Pt. Grey south to the Coal ports is always worth a shot weather permitting. Hutt Island and Tungstel bay (west side of Bowen Island has produced the most consistant catches all winter long as of late, some nice fish in the high teens and low twentys were reported. Thrasher and Polier should start picking up soon, Chinook fishing through late winter and Spring out in the straight is usually really good we have already heard of some good fish out that way. Anchovies fished with flashers, Gypsy and Coyote spoons in Watermelon, Tiger Prawn, Cop car and green glo have been the hot tickets out there. Make sure to fish just off the bottom and fish were the bait is. Don't forget to drop the crab traps crabbing has been really good for the last 2 weeks.

As of October the 1st 2008 , the recreational fishery for Lingcod and Rockfish in Areas 13 to 19 , 28 and 29 and Sub areas 20-5, 20-6 and 20-7 are now closed to fishing . This fishery should re-open as of June 1/ 2009. For more information call Gary Logan 604-666-9033.

Tidal Fraser-

Sturgeon fishing should start picking up any time now. The big Eulachon run will start migrating through the fraser mid to late march. After wintering in the  river and not feeding to much due to the ice cold water the sturgeon take advantage and will gorge themselves on the eulachons so we can expect some excellent spring fishing. Dollie Varden fishing has been good in the lower Fraser. Casting spoons and spinners of the bars or wfly fishing with big Zonker patterns works well or bait fishing with single eggs or worms fished off a bar rig is a good bet.
