Across Canada Walk

Ole Olson and Helen Viel left Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean on 30 March, 2000 bound for St. John's, Newfoundland by way of the Pacific coast, in the longest sanctioned volkssport event ever.
They made it - three weeks ahead of their schedule, finishing on Tuesday, November 13, 2000.
Schedule: Originally planned to make St. John's on December 7, 2000 but early on they jumped two-three weeks ahead of schedule.

Situation Reports:

561 kilometers through the frozen north in the first 15 days. From Inuvik on the Arctic Ocean to the Yukon Territory.

Mild and dry weather has aided them through the Yukon Territory.

Ole averages 50 kilometers a day through the first month, walking the entire distance. Helen is not far behind with 30-35 kilometers but takes advantage of the support vehicle. Don does the driving and cooking.

The support vehicle pulls 10 kilometers ahead of the walkers and awaits them with water and a chance to rest out of the weather, then leapfrogs ahead again.

Ole's trail song is the "Wild Rover" with its "no, nay, never..." which helped in an encounter with a friendly grizzly bear, who took the singing to be a sign not to molest the walker.

May 31: Ole and Helene stick their toes in the Pacific Ocean, having walked 2739 kilometers. Now they turn east.

June 23: Ole and Helene reach Alberta and the beauty of Jasper. They are 39% completed with 3920 km behind them, walking 45 kilometers a day.

July 1: After 4321 km, 13 days ahead of schedule, they take a couple of days off in Edmonton, Alberta and enjoy a 10K walk with the local club and Canada Day celebrations. Ole has lost 34 pounds and Helene has lost 10. Ole is in good condition but Helene is having some foot problems with burning soles. Driver Don takes a bow and Bruce Fink now takes the wheel of the support vehicle. On to the halfway point in Saskatchewan!

August 1: Winnipeg, Manitoba with 5,588 km behind them and just 4,400 km to go. The Vehicle Support Crew changed hands once again. Ole and Helen welcomed Graham Fawcett from Greely, Ontario who will have the pleasure of accompanying the walkers through to Thunder Bay, Ontario. The Winnipeg Legion hosted the couple by having them for lunch and
dinner earlier this week. It was quite a reception with a live band. After 50 km, Ole and Helene still had the energy to do a polka. Ole is estimating Kenora, Ontario by 9 August and Thunder Bay on the 17th.

October 7: Ole and Helen have completed 8,500 km to Grand Falls, New Brunswick. The stopover Helen's hometown of Rivière-du-Loup was quite special. with a great turnout of friends and family after having crossed the famous St Lawrence River from St. Simeon on the north shore. Only 1500 kilometers left to go, they now anticipate finishing their walk in St. John's, Newfoundland about 20 November.

November 13, 2000: The walkers toasted the finish, sipping Grand Marnier. It was cold and damp in St John's--Newfoundland has been a tough part of the walk with 15 of the last 20 days raining. After dipping her boot in the Atlantic Ocean - the third ocean of their trek, Helen was off to the Avalon Mall for some long overdue shopping business. Ole said he was looking forward to dinner at the Hungry Fisherman restaurant in St John's. Wow, What a Walk!

如果像试一下Canada真正的wilderness hike,你可以考虑试试Rockies的Great Divide Trail.

另外,cycling across Canada也许可以省你一些时间.

Re: 傻想: Walk across Canada

Thought about that. If only I had time. Maybe after I retire. ;-)
