.............
After a little more than 1/3 of the way across, I noticed a problem ahead. There were patches of water - a big patch of blueish hue in front of me. I knew this wouldn't be open lake water - it must be a collection of melt water. There seemed to be quite a lot of it. Didn't show up very well in pics:

As this mostly lay directly infront of me and to my right, I countoured left in hopes of avoiding it. While I did get around the blue bits of standing surface water, it unfortunately did not avoid the melt. My snowshoes soon started sinking down a bit - I could see water seeping into the track as I stepped out. Digging down with my pole I found there was 2" of breakaway crusty snow on top of ~4" of slushy water (more and more water, less and less slush) on top of what I thought was a solid layer (not sure if it was the lake ice or just another hard snow layer).
In any event, I didn't want to test to see how deep the slush would get or if the solid layer was in fact solid. Being solo, with no one around the lake at all, I decided to play it safe and just turn around. I'll return after a cold snap.
Retraced my steps until I was even with Price Bay and decided to go check it out. Made a b-line over, eventually joining up with tracks that had gone directly there from the cooking shelter........
