Good Fire safety idea for the group
1. liquid fuel fires with stoves are sometimes the hardest to control and the only safe method is to smother the flame and remove the oxygen (not easy when you have to react fast)
2. Moving the stove or using water and snow has potential to spread the fuel and increase the fire especially when the stove starts to leak (like what happen to lulu as it wouldn't turn off). We have all done this as our first reaction is to get the stove out of the Hut.
3. NOMEX Fire Blanket
This is a "very" lightweight and portable cloth which the group can take with them and is easy to use. You will not get burned and the cloth does not melt or damage the stove. I don't know why I didn't think of it before because I've used them often in the past. Best to keep it handy by the cooking area.
Just quicly drape the cloth over the flames and quickly pat, pat down. The cloth removes the oxygen. Always good to practise without fire first to get the idea.
