昨晚到达火山口湖，一别四月余，当时雪鞋绕湖的情景还历历在目。没想到，这次一来老天就给个下马威，虽然有7℃，可是加上大风，感觉到的就远远不是这个温度了。湖上云雾疾速随风飘动，把游客都裹在其中，我穿了羽绒衣都觉得寒气逼人。晚上博士说，如果明天的天气还是这样，不管爬什么山，都不是什么好主意。我心里想，天气反正是多变的，不到明天，谁知道呢？走着瞧吧，天气这东西，没人可以百分百确定的。有了这样的想法，我是一点也不紧张的。

果然，半夜的夜空亮起了星星，一阵窃喜之后又睡着了。醒来时发现快要日出了，啊哈，看来今天是可以去这里最高的Scott山的。没错，博士确认了这一点。喝咖啡，吃Mtn House加上煮鸡蛋，带上八宝粥和猪肉干，半升水（一口也没喝，因为根本用不着），就去了TH。

这里真好，沿着Rim Drive，一直到TH，就看到牌子上写着4km（单程），在公园手册里是这样形容的“strenuous hike", "spectacular view in all directions", 也是唯一可以用普通相机拍到火山口湖全景的地方，还有的地方说这是”family friendly“的trail（此言绝对不虚，不信有凭可证）。所有这些都正合我意，不难（拔高380米），不长（来回3小时），风景好！此地不去，那不是太傻了吗？

我们是到TH的第一辆车，Rim Drive旁可以随便停，还真有点不习惯，我们就径直停在指示牌边。下了车，走上Trail，一马平川，Mt Scott就在眼前，山顶两层的楼亭清晰可见，顿时精神倍爽。沿路不同的鸟叫声此起彼伏，小小的Pika们在晨曦中奔来跑去（按照博士的标准，这里的小动物很fit，他的“塑身”指导在这里好像派不上什么用场）。因为TH就已是2340多米，所以我们可以俯视大些的鸟们在山峦间盘旋。此时气温只有3℃，我们都穿上了羽绒衣，平时特爱不厌其烦换上换下的博士这次可真沉得住气，管他有风无风/登上跑下，他丝毫不受影响（可见这个trail是多么不费力气，轻松自如-- 此为证一）。

博士一路感叹，说是从未见过这么高的能见度（这个词他说的是英语visibility），而我呢，每次看到Crater Lake，就会不由自主地想到paradise，总有一种梦境的感觉，总觉得这不像现实里的实实在在的生活，缥缈神秘又安宁，这种心境很难表达。博士说的最多的也只是一个词“See”，带着上扬的腔调和特有的挥手，几乎是几步一停，几步一挥，我跟在后面看着听着，想不被传染？没可能啊。途中，还遇到两个从犹他来的中国人（祖籍分别来自东北和福建），豪爽的东北女士在告别时张开双臂，迈步向前，拥抱蓝天，大声地充满诗意地对我们说，“好好享受这美丽的大自然吧！”谁能不被她的火一样的热情烧着呢？

不知不觉中，徒步者最喜欢的ridge到了！

2015.07.29 Mount Dana, Yosemite National Park, CA

At an elevation of 13,061 feet (3,981 m), it is the second highest mountain in Yosemite (after Mount Lyell), and the northernmost summit in the Sierra Nevada which is over 13000 feet in elevation. Mount Dana is the highest peak in Yosemite that is a simple hike to the summit.

Mount Dana  is almost 4,000 meters high (13,061 feet). For Vera it became her 4th 11,000er.

2015.07.30 Death Valley, CA

Desert life is rather skinny.


Delicate desert life. One of us wanted to take home these as a souvenir, but it turned out too frail.

38C is already morning's temperature. Can't wait until noon time. ( We came here with an "exciting" plan of a 20km hike ). 8)


Vertical ambitions of the desert. Unclimbable.


Tomorrow's plan is a hike to the highest summit in the Death Valley National Park which rises two vertical miles above from here (exactly sea level = 0m elevation). Telescope Peak is our destination. 8)

There is no water in liquid form for many miles around. Desert rabbits seem don't care - as if they follow wisdom "if problem can't be solved it should be ignored". 8)



Rorschach must have invented his famous inkblot test after seeing this place 8).


Summer is low season in Death Valley National Park ( too hot ). Entire Wildrose drive-in campground, clean and neat, was empty and free of charge.


2015.07.31 For the hike to Telescope Peak we prepared for an environment devoid of any form of life, under heat of direct sun at the elevation of 3,000m above sea level. See dramatic photo of the peak here. Instead we discovered lush alpine forest and wide maintained trail. This was only the beginning of many other unexpected surprises.

走惯了家附近的树根路，见到这样的trail真有些受宠若惊：整个近12公里的山路，我没有踩到一个树根，虽然有很多树！由此可见trail整理得多好！



“Death Valley”和“Alpine Meadow”在我心里是完全没有交集的两个词，没想到它们竟配得如此完美（雨水富足的BC也要自叹不如了），在海拔3000多米的山坡，遍地的山花绽放得如此洒脱自如！除了惊叹，还是惊叹！

Telescope Peak is the highest summit in Death Valley National Park, at 11,047 feet (3,367m) it is Vera's 5th 11,000'er.

The elevation difference between the lowest point in Death Valley (-86 m) to the top of Telescope Peak (3367 m) is an incredible 3453 m.

Dignity of the old age.

早晨6：30时的气温已是37℃，哪料到山顶只有20.5℃。天有不测风云，更没想到的是我们很快就穿上了Goretex的夹克，因为突然下起了阵雨！（幸好是在登顶后，否则按照博士的风格，一定下撤了）


这是个维护得极好的trail，从这个TH的in & out记录本就可以看出来，而且用完了的记录本保存在哪里，里面都有详细说明。到顶后，也有这样的本子还有公园祝贺你登上这里最高峰的trophy，它们都保存得很好，在类似我们常见的防熊桶里，很干燥。


每次回到TH，博士从来不会急急忙忙地把背包扔进车里，匆匆离开，而是连这个unload的过程也不放过，要慢慢享受。也许这样的结束才是圆满吧！

2015.08.02 Grand Canyon,  AZ

South Kaibab - Bright Angel traverse
第一次来大峡谷的时候，全程走的是South Kaibab Trail上下；第三次，是南岸到北岸的五天四夜背包行。看来博士对这里情有独钟，这一次第一个hike就是走Tonto Trail来衔接South Kaibab和Bright Angel：从South Kaibab下到Tip-off，然后转Tonto West，经过Indian Garden，接上Bright Angel一路到South Rim。

由于不是原路返回，所以我们把车停在Bright Angel ＴＨ，然后从这里坐免费的Shuttle Bus（还带有空调呢）到South Kaibab的TH。大峡谷的服务非常周到，这些Bus最早凌晨4点发车，30分钟/班，6点后15分钟/班，而且还有专门的“Hiker‘s Express Bus”，送徒步者快速到达South Kaibab（中途停经Backcountry Info Centre），也是从4am开始。图中的博士正在静静地等着公车的到来，“calm”是他的代名词，而我呢，在一边兴奋地走来走去“消耗”着我的能量（生姜还是老的辣，我还是经验不够啊）。


South Kaibab Trail从南岸到Colorado River,长10.1公里，elevation change 1481m。这条路的特点是每一步都是好风景（我们下去时的平均速度恐怕打破了北美户外的记录，大概1km/h，可见风景留步），缺点是整个trail都没有一个补水的地方，所以在这里的告示牌上都建议大家不要在回程上来时走这条路。走Bright Angel上来，风景有些单调，但是有三处可以补水。仁者见仁智者见智，就看各人自己的情况和目的来选择了。


大峡谷的徒步有些与众不同，闻不到林子里的松树的气息，一阵阵飘来的往往是骡子和马们的尿骚味和一颗颗球状的依然是青草的粪便所带有的特殊的“香味”。山路也因为经常有它们同行，踩出了特有的足印，每个横木之间都有凹塘，有时候分不清那是雨水还是尿液。这次我们遭遇了几次阵雨，还用到了Tarp，所以在trail上不时见到一个个带水的洼地，我是一个也不敢碰，尽量让我的boots不沾“水”。
