Without instrumental measuring the exact slope it is very easy to overestimate. However, 45 degrees is a borderline when "traditional" hiking stops. Snowshoes and ski poles just don't work anymore. As always in life, it is dangerous to use tools on the features they were not designed for. You are leaving safe and entering "sub-technical" terrain. Summer time they call it funny name "scrambling" (most dangerous outdoors sport in my opinion). Time for helmet, ice axe, crampons and special skills. Occasional use of safety rope for those who don't feel comfortable. Have larger safety margins for emergency (day time, weather, gear, clothes).
Or pack it all and go home. The section above HSCT junction has steeper parts, which I don't think the group has reached. Although I bailed last minute, I felt guilty packing short emergency rope, ice ax and my helmet, excusing myself that I was just making sure to provide safety for the trip watching group over steep section. Instead should gave given a specific warning. The very last part just before actual summit is also exposed (once on my trip a rock-climber refused to cross it unprotected, we had to walk her over).
And yes, be scared over those steep slopes is a very natural feeling, be careful going an a trip with those who are not. 8) |
