Without instrumental measuring the exact slope it is very easy to overestimate. However, 45 degrees is a borderline when "traditional" hiking stops. Snowshoes and ski poles just don't work anymore. As always in life, it is dangerous to use tools on the features they were not designed for. You are leaving safe and entering "sub-technical" terrain. Summer time they call it funny name  "scrambling" (most dangerous outdoors sport in my opinion). Time for helmet, ice axe, crampons and special skills. Occasional use of safety rope for those who don't feel comfortable. Have larger safety margins for emergency (day time, weather, gear, clothes).

Or pack it all and go home. The section above HSCT junction has steeper parts, which I don't think the group has reached. Although I bailed last minute, I felt guilty packing short emergency rope, ice ax and my helmet, excusing myself that I was just making sure to provide safety for the trip watching group over steep section. Instead should gave given a specific warning. The very last part just before actual summit is also exposed (once on my trip a rock-climber refused to cross it unprotected, we had to walk her over).

And yes, be scared over those steep slopes is a very natural feeling, be careful going an a trip with those  who are not. 8)

得到授权了,来张好的,看一次笑一次。

如果这个坡是45度的话,一定要冰爪和冰镐了,有个绳子就更好了。

Thanks Panshibo and jsorder.

Above HSCT junction there was no footprint at all. Probably no team was up to there last weekend, below that point we were still able to see some light footprint. So we were lucky to make a right decision. Safety is always No.1. We shouldn't do something which is not under control. Give up when you are not ready for it.

Should have crampon and ice axe ready for some winter trips. but we also need chances to practice with these gears. Having gears and comfortable using gears are totally different concepts. Trainings are necessary.

I am not sure if I should touch technical terrain. I am still enjoying easy hiking so far, non-technical, but I do like deep snow and climbing.

Why bother with risk? Living in British Columbia, we are blessed to have so much hiking choice. It is unreal hiking paradise. One of the exciting projects would be to complete all 103 Hikes in SW BC, as in the book with this title. I heard some club members have already done so ( and proud about it ). 8)

On average 20 hikes a year will make anyone busy until year 2018! And every time it is a new different trail!

yeah, agree, don't want to do it with risk. A lot of choices, even same trail, summer, fall, winter and even every time is different.
