On return we spotted a herd of wild horses. Like the previous encounter with wild large beasts of Utah (Kings Peak), they made a long direct eye contact with us.

Lady Mountain 的基本数据 （引自 C. Purcell 的书）：

在温哥华的时候，我已经标出了Lady Mountain：评分4*，距离短，级别不低；具有挑战性，又不需要长途跋涉，多好啊！但是并没有得到博士100%的approval。一是因为它的TH在Scenic Dr上，这个季节只有shuttle可以到，而我们并不喜欢去登有shuttle限制的山峰，好像你必须几点才能出发、几点才能回来，多不自由。二是因为它的难度系数 YDS 5.4，循序渐进的博士认为有些冒进，我们应该从Class 4开始逐步提高。看，博士句句在理，我就只好把这个 Lady 先放在一边了。

蒙上帝厚爱，第一天的Angels Landing和Observation Point，让我们领略到了Shuttle的种种方便和舒适，也让我们意识到如果徒步到TH又是多么的不现实（太远了）。既然这一条解禁了，那上面的第一个原因自动消失！而Kinesava之行，让我们对这里的sandstone的terrain有了初步的了解，也因此建立起了自信。

“去Lady Mountain！” 博士没有一丝犹豫地就决定了（超果断！），我听了激动得要命。我们就在20号的早晨，天亮后，在Visitor Centre的停车场做准备（博士是如何打包的，大概很多人都见识过了），我们各自带了2L的水袋，加电解质片，装备早已了然于心，准备起来一点也不费事。好了，上Shuttle，出发！

Zion Lodge是第五站（Angels Landing是#6），和我们一起下来的人并不多。下车后，看到一队人，4个年轻小伙子，1个中年男子，还有1个中年女性。看到他们有人身上的绳子，“也许他们也是去Lady的？”嗯，我要问一问。离我最近的年轻人热情地回答我，Yes. Lady Mountain! 听说我们也去，他马上就指着对面的山，That's Lady Mountain! 啊？这么陡？笔直的身躯直冲上天，太精彩了！我马上就转不动眼球了。你去过吗？Yeh, a few times. 然后他就问我，你们带绳子了吗？（因为我们的都在包里，外面是看不出来的）带了！（看来真的要带哦）

我像个传声筒，用力指着对面的Lady，把这些原原本本地汇报给博士：中间那个峰就是Lady Mountain，左边是Jacob（特难的山），右边矮些的应该就是Lady East Spur吧？（天哪，想到要爬这样的山，太令人激动！）

Lady Mountain, 第一眼，我们就被你迷住了！

博士一语道破了Zion和大峡谷的不同：它们就是互相反着来的！大峡谷，我们是站在Rim上，俯瞰、远眺；而Zion呢，则是身在谷底,  看什么山，都得仰望。可同样是Valley，和Yosemite 高大挺拔的松林相比，Zion的木棉树在春天显得清秀雅致，加上凉爽的风吹过，给人特别舒服温馨的感觉。

Zion Lodge就建在这郁郁葱葱里，真是好风水。到 Lodge对面，上一座人行桥，过桥后左拐到一米多宽的trail，100m后，分叉，向右。此后，由于这条trail已经 officially 关闭了，所以不再有人维护，但是还能看出铺过的痕迹。再走约400m，有一景点牌，是看Virgin River的。过了这个牌子三四十米，离开trail，转左上，就好像开始了我们的BCMC 一样的山径，一直爬升到一面山墙前，墙中有一细窄的长条“chimney”，我们要爬上去！Wow，这么快就到了第一关了！

书上介绍了这个烟囱状的、中段还有些overhang的部分，Steven的TR里说是YDS５.４。在它的底部右侧，有一个belay用的anchor，我要在这里为博士做保护。由于第一步就是个楔形的石缝，背包可能会卡住你上不去，但是只有这里是突破口才能借机爬到第二步，再往上就是overhang，所以建议博士不要背包，因为第一个爬的人在设第一个anchor之前，fall factor最大，最危险。博士上去了，并在overhang的下面放了一个cam，此时，那个在车站遇到的team成了5人，在我后面排队等着，他们也到了。（那位女士走上小路后，打了退堂鼓，回去了，所以也耽误了他们的时间）

博士上去后，安全了，便按照计划，要把我们的背包都提上去。好啊，我将绳子扣上背包往上送，糟了，博士拉到一半，不行，overhang那里过不去！怎么拉也不行，我又不能在没有保护的情况下试着上去托它一把（旁边都是cliff）！只能再放下来，暗下决定：我要把两个包都带上去！把博士包的肩带、腰带放到最松，打算套在我的包上，不行，怎样也够不着。后来那个告诉我Lady Mountain 的小伙子主动问我要帮忙吗？要，请你帮我把这包加在我的包上！（腰带还是扣不上）我便在博士的belay下，站在了chimney的下面，上！上到那个夹缝里，真正体会到什么叫动掸不得。头盔也被我下了（一抬头碰到石头，挡着看不见），包都卡住了，没法转身，但是我必须右转后，才可以将右腿腾出来，跨出石缝上爬。“Tension！”我就这么大叫着，不知道在这里纠结了多少分钟（但是有博士belay，反正我是安全的），真的以为不行了，但是最终没有放弃，硬是转了过来，上去了！接着，问题又来了，因为腰带扣不上，外面的背包右肩带挂了下来，而我实在没有力量把它扳回来（因为这第二个包已经下滑到腰以下了），只好破釜沉舟，我松了它，腾出了我的右臂（否则都没法抬），抓住overhang上面的石头，爬上一步，此时博士的背包的整个重量都在我的左手腕上，但是，我也把它拽上来了！（事后我们进行了分析总结，制定出了更好的办法，那是后话）

第一关，闯关成功！斗志被大大地激发了！！

Lady Mountain，看上去底座不大，不像Kinesava那么宏伟。她陡峭挺拔，没有什么长长的ridge，也没有一点平缓的坡，渐渐瘦身上去一直到顶。我们所走的“route”，几乎都是紧贴着山体的外围“做成”的极窄的石道，很多带有人工凿出的印记。有时候没法判断的时候，也可以凭着这些“工整”的石块来confirm我们是在正确的路上。

这说起来和她的历史有关。原来这个在石壁上有黄色、红色（下山的方向好像是用黑色）标记的“trail”， 是Zion Lodge为住客们开拓出来的（现在想来，这idea多么Crazy！），1924年，National Park Service见到了这个有数个“not trail-able” 的部分的trail，还专门在这些后来Class 5以上的部分安装了梯子和电缆。但是，即便这样，事故还是频频发生，最终，1978年，梯子和电缆都被撤走了，这条trail就处于自生自灭的状态。（Lodge的客人来爬此山？好厉害！不出事故才怪呢！）

trail是无人维护了，但是那些带有箭头的记号有很多还在，它们给了我们极大的帮助。多少次见到它们时的欣喜和释然，就像你飘在海上突然看到了灯塔，你就有了正确的方向，也就更有了前进的动力。Lady Mountain的沙石，在下一关“dihedral”，我大大地领教了它的无形的威力。Dihedral，什么意思啊？（跟着博士，登山的过程也是学英语的过程）“Open book”。哦，打开的书？有意思！再看Courtney写的关于这本“书”："I've climbed this crux numerous times, and I swear each time I end up finagling it in a new and inventive ungraceful way." 它约 4m 高，右边的书页有横向的一条条外凸的弧形的棱，书脊到左边有些overhang，我们到的时候，那个group的那个小伙子已经上去了，正在一个个belay其他人，他们也是后来把背包拉上去的。这本打开的书，那一条条的棱，不是正好可以踩吗？为什么每个人爬的时候都要struggle一会儿呢？我站在下面看着，琢磨着他们每个人上去的样子：每一步四肢的摆放位置及重心在哪里，试着记住这些要注意的地方。

照例还是博士先上。那个非常友好的小伙子主动给了博士绳子，他要belay博士！我在下面看着，可能比他还要紧张。果然，每个人都要经历这艰难的overhang的部分，博士停在那里，反复试着不同的姿势，最后右腿终于跨上去了，人也翻了上去。（on belay, 不是说有人拉着你上，而是指你若摔跤会有绳子吊住你，所以还是要靠自己爬上去的）。我们谢了他，博士就开始拉我们的背包上去。也许是因为后面没有人等着经过，没有了压力，这回能更好地思考了，虽然碰到了同样的问题，但是我们把包用butterfly套在绳子的中段，我用一端的绳子来redirect背包的方向，所以博士顺利地拉上了背包，接下来就剩我了。

不亲临其境，真的不能体会到其中的挣扎。我站在书面前，跨上第一步，才知道这本书真的不好读，简直难读极了。原来，每条弧形的棱，上面铺满了细密的沙子，本以为可以踩住的落脚点，没有一个地方能让你安心的；那靠着手臂的力量行不行？不行，因为根本抓不住，一碰，手上沾的都是沙子，此路也不通！这下子完全明白了为什么每个人都那么纠结。一开始利用了左侧的书页的counter force，站在了Overhang的下面，博士英明，他在overhang的下面插进了一个cam！这里并没有绳子扣进去，这个cam相当于一个很好的hold，你可以抓住它平衡住自己，还可以借力去爬你的下一步。有了cam，情形大逆转，我马上变成了乘凉的“后人”， 顺利过了这个crux，与博士回合了。

Lady Mountain，原来你就是这样一步步考验你的客人啊？好啊，看看我们到底能不能一睹你的芳容！

2017.03.24 Manly Beacon - Death Valley National Park, California

Manly Beacon is a towering spire that rises above the Death Valley badlands. The peak stands out in stark contrast to the backdrop of the Red Cathedral formation and the surrounding mud hills. The peak is not on the standard Golden Canyon to Zabriskie Point trail, but its dramatic relief attracts interest from hikers and climbers alike.

2017.03.24 Manly Beacon (contd.)

Route Conditions:Maintained Trail, Unmaintained Trail, Scramble, Exposed Scramble
..The ridge.. is very spicy, with slick sandstone, very limited handholds and devastating exposure on both sides. Had no problem on the ascent, but I was too sketched out on the way down and negotiated the steepest parts on my butt with the aid of a trekking pole. I took my time, focused on each step, and was very relieved to make my way down to the mellower section of the ridge.
