CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #16 - The place is good for hiking, but not the best in North America.
Remember that story about 井底蛙? He thought his place was so good until the turtle came along and told him about the sea...
If you are looking for a good outdoors workout (in terms of your comfort distance + elevation gain), 360 degrees views (preferably from high(est) summit), personal safety (from animals as well from humans - car break-ins etc.) and comfort ( well maintained trails - preferably all the way to the summit - zero bushwhacking and no route-finding headache) - what many of us go hiking for, then Canadian Rockies is not the best place in North America - presence of grizzly bears and infamous shale limits your fun experience.
In case you were curious, here is the list of North American hiking areas in order: higher score = better hiking.
Ontario - 1 ( Lake Simcoe / Algonquin Park anybody?)
Southern BC - 2 ( No Lake Simcoe but Garibaldi Lake instead with high probability of car vandalism, Mt. Mulligan as typical representative - like it or not - somehow comes to mind too)
U.S. Cascade Range (WA, OR) - 2.5 - Same terrain as in Southern BC but a lot safer and trails are a lot better.
Canadian Rockies - 3 ( National Park status delivers quality and safety , good views - if only no grizzly bears and shale)
Sierra Nevada - 4 ( no grizzlies, granite instead of lime stone, pretty safe, open clean forest leading to alpine leading to a lot taller summits )
Colorado Rockies - 5 ( nothing to complain about - big selection of various routes will make anybody satisfied ) |
