2015.07.08 Town of Ha Ling Peak in the centre.

In 1896 Ha Ling, a Chinese cook for the Canadian Pacific Railway (some say the Okaloosa Hotel in Canmore) was bet 50 dollars that he could not climb the peak and plant a flag on the summit in less than 10 hours. According to the Medicine Hat News of October 22, 1896, he started the ascent at 7:00 am the previous Saturday morning and was back in time for lunch. As nobody believed his story, he led a party of doubters to the summit where he planted a much larger flag beside the original, this one visible to the naked eye from Canmore. The townsfolk referred to the mountain as Chinaman's Peak in his honour.

CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #15 - Consider Ridge Walking

CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #15 - Consider Ridge Walking

At the end of summer just before grey rainy shoulder arrival, when higher elevations become less safe because of fresh snow and dynamic rapid weather changes, consider Ridge Walking - something between hiking and climbing:you still get pretty good views, a lot better than of just  "regular flat-ground hiking". Parker Ridge is a classic example. Panorama Ridge in BC would be sort of example too, if you ignore crowded long nothing-to-see approach, shorter view time and possibility of finding your car vandalized upon returning. A handy book was written, not coincidentally titled "Ridgewalks in the Canadian Rockies"- just flipping through pages can make one excited and start packing. 140 routes no less! 8)

RIDGEWALKS IN THE CANADIAN ROCKIES, SECOND EDITION presents over 140 ridgewalks from Waterton Lakes National Park to Jasper National Park and in British Columbia. There are over 50 pages of maps and more than 160 photos. Ridgewalking is an enjoyable, often challenging way to experience the landscape. Ridgewalks hold great appeal because of the views they offer: it's like being on a summit all day.

CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #16 - The place is good for hiking, but not the best in North America.

Remember that story about 井底蛙? He thought his place was so good until the turtle came along and told him about the sea...

If you are looking for a good outdoors workout (in terms of your comfort distance + elevation gain), 360 degrees views (preferably from high(est) summit), personal safety (from animals as well from humans - car break-ins etc.) and comfort ( well maintained trails - preferably all the way to the summit - zero bushwhacking and no route-finding headache) - what many of us go hiking for, then Canadian Rockies is not the best place in North America - presence of grizzly bears and infamous shale limits your fun experience.

In case you were curious, here is the list of North American hiking areas in order: higher score = better hiking.

Ontario - 1 ( Lake Simcoe / Algonquin Park anybody?)
Southern BC - 2 ( No Lake Simcoe but Garibaldi Lake instead with high probability of car vandalism, Mt. Mulligan as typical representative - like it or not - somehow comes to mind too)
U.S. Cascade Range (WA, OR) - 2.5 - Same terrain as in Southern BC but a lot safer and trails are a lot better.
Canadian Rockies - 3 ( National Park status delivers quality and safety , good views - if only no grizzly bears and shale)
Sierra Nevada - 4 ( no grizzlies, granite instead of lime stone, pretty safe, open clean forest leading to alpine leading to a lot taller summits )
Colorado Rockies - 5 ( nothing to complain about - big selection of various routes will make anybody satisfied )

Robson

2016.04.26 Mount Robson - contd.

Cinquefoil is one in the Canadian Rockies that opens earliest. Trail was dry and surprisingly well maintained.

2016.04.26 Jasper NP - Cinquefoil Mountain, Alberta - contd.

You never know. . .", It is so true.
