2016.05-14 Mount Athabasca, Jasper NP - contd.
Trip's Statistics
Distance, return: 12.2 km
Elevation Difference: 1,515 m
Summit Elevation: 3,491 m
Time Up: 8h10m
Time Down: 4h45m
Summary
The two of us climbed to the top in bluebird day conditions. The mountain was covered with three feet of fresh dry snow. Freezing levels were at the parking when we left for the summit. Trail was dry except the "chute", which had 45° gradient snow, measured with digital angle meter. This was the steepest part of the entire route. Snow temperatures were -4°C consistently through the day. In the morning the south wind picked up and moved masses of dry snow on the north face of Sliverhorn, which avalanched on our route below sometime between after we crossed the glacier and before our return. The avy went down almost 2/3 of the glacier. Being caught in this could have dragged one into the large crevasse below.
Despite other reports, the steepest gradient of the North Glacier was 40°, at the traverse, measured with the instrument. We tried to make a shortcut at the exit of the Glacier, but after making a couple of holes dropped the idea and followed the homework made route.
