Mount Whyte had been on our wish list for three years since we saw it from the top of Mt. Niblock. Now, the day has finally come to stand on it! Panorama from the summit.
2019.08.05 Mount Whyte (contd.)
Mount Whyte as seen from Lake Louise, on left. Mt. Niblock at right (climbed three years ago). We had exceptional weather window of two weeks clear blue skies and no smoke from forest fires.
Mandatory touristy shot with Mt. Victoria at the back.
Busy Lake Louise. Parking is full before 07:00. Mt. Whyte is poking at right.
This is just an approach to the base. The actual route is still to come.
Lakes Agnes and Louise as seen from above.
Ridgy exposed section has two older rappel stations. Not sure who would dare to use them with so many loose rocks around.
On safe ground. The actual summit is seen behind of the tallest point on this photo.
In Canadian Rockies the rock is very loose. Regardless of size, a block may detach from the mountain and take you down with it. So climbing techiques developed in climbing gym or on solid granite of Squamish can be dangerous - dynamic moves here ("jumping") would be a very poor idea.
Blue skyes for almost every day out of 19 days we have been to Canadian Rockies this season, yet no forest fires = no smoke. Best visibility we have ever seen.
A SIDE ANNOUNCEMENT: We have finally reached our self-imposed quota for teaching Alpine-101 course in 2019 ( at least 5 alpine peaks that we successfully climbed using rope in the last 12 months). We may give some classes (always 100% free of charge) in the shoulder season(s) of 2019 / 2020 to a group (usually 4 ppl) of qualified individuals.
