CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #3
Rather counter-intuitive, but obvious: if you come to Canadian Rockies to see as many beautiful places as possible (and there are more than enough!) you should avoid backpacking, and instead stay in drive-in campgrounds. Canadian Rockies offer 100+ maintained trails, and the lighter you are the farther you will get. Staying overnight in base drive-in camps and hiking around during daytime will give you a lot richer Rockies experience, otherwise you will spend resources  and your valuable vacation time carrying (rather small) tent at snail speed getting to one selected place which you could have just walked to from your base camp next to highway. Not to  mention mandatory back-country permits, camping reservations and fees, and a potential for a night-time bear visit to your tent  (you do cook at least 50 m downwind off your tent, don't you?) 8)

Depending whom you ask, this part at the back of Mt Edith Cavell will be called Astoria River trail or Tonquin Valley Pass. It is used by hikers, horseback riders, backpackers and alpine climbers. We hiked up this moody part in the search of ACC hut near Chrome Lake.

In the absolute absence of otherwise ever present urban distractions such as internet, phone calls, text  messaging, social media or radio broadcasts the freed mind becomes amazingly clear. Happy, it produces convincing answers to questions long time nagging you.

In local (South West) British Columbia, elevations 2,500 m is usually where the summits are. In Canadian Rockies, it is where the trail heads are. 8)

Marmots are just large squirrels, that's what the science says. They usually ignore humans being around. This one however refused to be photographed, and expressed protest.

Cavell Meadows trail continued to some summit that has no name on map. Was windy with good views.

CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #4
After a few tourist hikes in the CR (excellent book Classic Hikes in the Canadian Rockies), you may get into the first stages of addiction - the more you get the more you want. Pick the book "Selected ALPINE CLIMBS in the Canadian Rockies"  and hike up described approach routes. Even without climbing training and ambitions, you can follow hiking trails to many ACC huts and bases that climbers walk before getting to business, climbing that is. You will never see crowds and unleashed dogs, guaranteed. After all, you may get the idea and start training for your first alpine climb, who knows? 8)

PHOTO: Ideal climbing conditions: North Face of Mt Athabaska (3,491 m), taken from the base of North Glacier (Normal Route) II. You can see climbers track on the lower right part. Looks so inviting, no?

CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #5
Ever thought how it would feel standing on a summit 3,000 m above sea level? Reality is that getting to quite a few CR peaks don't require alpine training. A GPS and a book ( Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies ) is all you need. Peak "Easy" category, turn your GPS on and don't forget spare batteries. 8)

CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #6
If you stay in drive-in campgrounds ( and not backpacking, see tip #3 ), bring electric kettle. Some camps (but not all) have electricity in the washrooms, so you can use it to boil water and cook. High-class would be to have a rice cooker too. I have seen people use own cappuccino machines. Of course, portable stove like the one used for hot-pot has to be part of the every morning set. 8)
