CANADIAN ROCKIES TIP #7
Leave your Gore-Tex waterproof pants home, nobody wears them in the heat of summer, not are they really needed. Contrary to what Gore-Tex co wants you to believe, the fabric is not breatheable nor is it waterproof. The result is that most of time you suffer for nothing, getting wet from your own perspiration.
Better go to Costco and buy middle layer ($8-$15 ) and shorts (~$15), you will never miss your (expensive) pants, I promise! 8)
TIP 7.1 Dri-release® Merino Paradox baselayer pant is now on sale

TIP 7.2 Better yet, instead of just shorts, get convertible pants (e.g. from MEC) - so combinations will cover 99.99% of your needs: shorts only, shorts+baselayer , shorts extended to pants, shorts extended to pants + baselayer. I use this all the time for hiking, scrambling and alpine climbing. Last 12 months I put Gore-tex only once when it was -25C on Mt Rohr camping overnight.
