2016.04.10 Mt. Rainier, WA - contd.
Winter alpine climbing is most "heavy" on gear - aside from "regular" technical kit we bring camping, food, fuel, glacier travel, avalanche beacons, emergency equipment (PLB, snow saw, snow shovels, tarp), extra warm clothes, snowshoes and crampons. Hard to believe all that stuff still fits in a backpack, but it does! And one has to carry it to the Base Camp, in this case 7km distance, 1,500m elevation gain. Alpine approaches are often no less easy than actual climbing. No wonder after one such a trip many will kiss good-bye to mountaineering, for a very good reason. 8)
PHOTO: Good morale is more important than anything else! Without it it's better to pack and go home. Mt. Rainier at the back, camp Muir is visible too, if you know where to look.
